This little jem off an alley in Ellicott City was perfect. We went on a Saturday night without reservations. Luckily for us it was after 8 so we were able to get a table. I think my favorite things in the world are tapas and infused vodka and they Do It Right. Our server was knowledgeable and steered us through our choices. I can't list everything we had but it was all GOOD.

so my bf and i love to eat and we venture out to different restaurants whenever we get a chance! i have to say, i will not be coming back here again. The service was very blah. Our server was so dead when he approached us. The food was a "NO-GO". the only thing i liked was their tomato tower and their honey miso scallops. that was it. We were so disappointed since we usually eat everything!! I would not recommend this place to anyone. SAVE yourself a trip people.

My fiancé and I went to the Rumor Mill last weekend for something fun and different, we made an 8:00 reservation but got there early so we could start with a drink at the bar. The place was fairly small and very crowded. We still easily got bar seats but then waited over 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge us. My fiancé ordered a craft beer and I got an infused cocktail. Both were good but I must say that for an infusion based bar the set up looked similar to a snow ball stand during off season. Dusty, sticky bottles sitting on top of a plywood box. Many of the infusing containers had rotted looking fruit in lemonade dispensers. The chalk board that lists the flavors wasn't updated and just had things scribbled out haphazardly. Clearly atmosphere isn't what they are going for. We decided to start with an appetizer since we were both pretty hungry so we ordered jalapeño poppers. The menu mentioned something about sweetness in the description but we still thought the sugar killed it. For dinner I ordered the miso honey scallops with cucumber salad and really they are the shining star of this review, honestly they are the only thing keeping me from going one star. When my fiancé tried to order his entree at the same time the bartender gave him an attitude. I know that they are busy and quite frankly under staffed but that is zero reason not to try to at least be polite. His dish came our several minutes after mine and was ok at best. He ordered the $18 strip steak and it was three bites of meat. I understand the idea of tapas but the value truly wasn't there any way you look at it.

Slightly disappointed, lack of flavor profiles and just a strange experience. So I went here at 8pm and outside of the bar the entire restaurant was booked - so we choose the bar tables. Uneven and though connected as if they were for a party of 4, sitting here was awkward - especially when everyone is trying to share food. We chose a number of small plates and the worst was the chicken frites. Rock hard shoe string potatoes fries topped with some strange balsamic reduction - which was disgustingly thick and all over (I should say overflowing on the fries) the 3 chicken strips. The chicken was seared, lightly spiced and covered in parsley topped with feta cheese and tomato with artichoke hearts. I will consider this the most foul disgusting dish I have ever ate anywhere! The best of our five small plates was the duck, and brie, followed by the crab dip, fusion and sweet potato fries. Most of the food was fair at best and certainly far from a culinary escape - to be honest I am unsure how they won Baltimore's best award... several times.... Cocktail wise is probably one of the best reasons to visit. The infused vodka's help to create an interesting amount of drink options. The chalkboard behind the bar had nearly 20+ choices and the beer selection was ok at best; though the menu attempted to offer "seasonal" options, the selection ended up coming a little short of this. At the time hoppy ales are were seasonal, including a few spring ales, but the menu had nothing "seasonal" on the offered. The strawberry vodka concoction someone ordered was 80% vodka and maybe 20% strawberry puree - a little too much vodka personally. 2-stars avoidable - I'll go to Victoria's Gastropub in Columbia before coming here again.

The only reason to give it one star is because we ate most of the food we were served. Chef Matt, also the owner, really got into it with us because my non-GF dining partner ordered her soup with dumpling on the side. And, to protect ME, would not serve her ANY DUMPLING AT ALL. We asked to speak with him and it took 6 more plates for him to make his way to our table. He didn't acquiesce in the slightest. He stood by his convictions that GF diners should not be in the same zip code as gluten eating patrons, even after our third request. In addition, he argued with us at outr table in front of all the other customers, never backing down! Worst of all, he threw his own employee under the bus and took no accountability. We WON'T be going back.

My partner and I came here for my birthday not too long ago. He and I would always walk by and wonder what exactly the food was like, but we finally tried The Rumor Mill out. Our server was very nice and seemingly nervous (perhaps she was new?). We ordered the brie appetizer with the breaded oyster mushrooms to start. And to be honest we ordered a good amount of things from the menu, but none that I can recall specifically without too much thought (ouch). The plates and portions are very small, but everything is very tasty. I like the fact that this restaurant is very different to any in the area. The prices are reasonable and it's very much a quieter crowd that seems to frequent the joint. I'll be back. OH! The vodka infusions --- holy shit are there a lot of them here! If not for the food, come for those!

Food: excellent, we loved the sweet potatoes and haricots verts. Drinks: great beer list and lots of cocktail options. Service: friendly, helpful, attentive. This restaurant uses fresh produce from The Samaritan Women farm in Baltimore (google it). Supporting this restaurant supports a good cause! We'll be back!

I really enjoyed both my dinner and the service. The wait staff was young, but attentive and very friendly. The steak was perfectly prepared with a really nice spiciness to it. The tomatoes were probably the only disappointment, though the dressing was great.

We (my husband and I) have been here twice now and completely enjoyed the experience both times! The service is excellent and the food is fabulous. We have tried two different menus (due to season changes) and both have been amazing. This is our go to place when we want a quiet atmosphere and great food. I also love that when they seat you they try not to put you on top of other tables!

This place is set off to the side in alley, and from the outside, looks like a hole in the wall. My first experience here was over a year ago, it was my boyfriend's and mine first date. We just saw Young Frankenstein at The Wine Barrel, and were looking on Four Square for good food nearby. This place fit what we were looking for, but we almost couldn't find it on account of it being located in an odd spot. I'm glad we did! The decor and atmosphere inside is much classier than expected, though still inviting and cozy. We were seated quickly, and the server explained the restaurant: this is a topless bar, meaning you're ordering several small portions of food to share. One plate is not considered a meal as it would be in average restaurants. To begin, we asked the server for his recommendation, and wound up ordered the Crab Dumplings. They came four on a plate with a dish of sauce, and were some of the best delights I had ever tasted. I remember ordering something else, but can't quite recall what. I just know I loved everything I had that night. We went back not too long ago, and once again were seated quickly and had a lovely waitress. We ordered the Crab Dumplings, which were more amazing than I remembered, Sweet Potato Fries, the Kobe Sliders, and for dessert, the Brulee. The fries were cooked to perfection: wonderfully crisp on the outside, and flavorful and soft on the inside. I'm not a big fry person, but I did love them. The Kobe Sliders were good, although not as tasteful as the crab dumplings. I was expecting more from them, but they weren't bad. The Brulee, however, was delicious! It was actually a little bigger than what we were expecting since the rest of the food servings were so small. We could really tell how much effort went into the food when we ate the Brulee. The caramel was wonderfully hardened and warm on top of the cooler custard, and it left a pleasant taste in my mouth afterwards. I would absolutely order it again. All in all, the majority of the food here is wonderful, and the service and atmosphere make for a great restaurant. At some point, I'd like to enjoy their mixed drinks as I've only heard good things about them.

The Rumor Mill is the best restaurant in downtown Ellicott City, aside from Tersiguels. The Chef Matt Milani often checks on his patrons to make sure everything the food is good and that everyone is okay. His plates are delicious. And when you get a look into the kitchen, if you are sitting at the bar, the kitchen looks extremely neat and clean! The food is delicious. Last time we visited we had the honey miso scallops (amazing! And perfectly cooked) and then we ordered the beef tagliata (also very delicious) and the crab dumplings! Everything was so good, including the desserts! Its a great place to go and grab a drink and some food or even for a date. The atmosphere is unique and modern with rustic feel. The bar makes their own infused vodkas!! A must try! Such a great place tucked away behind the street in Ellicott City!

Our favorite place to eat in Old Ellicott City! My wife and I have eaten here many many times. We love the food and I love the rotating micro brew beers they stock. It is best to get many small dishes and share. So, if you go with friends, make sure they don't mind sharing plates of food. We have only had one "bad" food experience here and it was during a "First Friday". The restaurant was packed and the service suffered. Also, the Chef must have been over worked because the Kobe Sliders that are normally perfectly cooked were burnt and when we ordered the tempura vegetables, we were told they were out. So, we ordered something else. To our surprise, a different waiter came out a little later and served us with the tempura vegetables that we were told was no longer available. It was good but, we were not expecting it and thus ordered a different tempura dish. Didn't want two tempura dishes. We also found a hair in the dish. The waitress did not charge us for the dish we were not expecting or the one that had a hair in it. Luckily this was not our first time here otherwise we might not be back. I think they were just way way too swamped that night. Normally, the food and service is excellent. Bottom line, don't go here on the first Friday of the month and you should have a great night with great food.

Went to the Rumor Mill with my wife for Valentine's day. Their special menu was great. The Lamb was delicious and the desert was incredible.

I can honestly say that I have absolutely no idea what the lot of these people are talking about. It almost seems like inane rambling and random, shouted lies... It's as if... As if I walked into an asylum! I have been to the Rumor Mill several times. I first visited because I had heard rumors that it was a good place to go. Those rumors were correct. Yes, as some have said, it attempts to be "trendy" (if that even works with food), but in all good ways. There is nothing wrong with what they're doing there, and having tried lots of dishes (including ones that were just temporarily on the menu), I can say that the crazy things they do at this place just... Work... Unlike 31+ million Americans currently. If you stick to the Asian-fusion-type dishes, you can't go wrong. All of their "traditional" Asian dishes come with their own spin and I cannot think of any that I could've gotten better anywhere else. If they have the when you go, the rice balls. They usually have different variations each night, and all of the ones I've tried are Tony-The-Tiger-Grrrreat! I can honestly say I enjoy these balls so much, I've considered changing my name to Elton John. What else is good there? Oh man, their desserts. Oh, and the seasonal beers... Goddamn those are excellent! One of the more interesting things that I've had there is the aptly named "Fries and Ketchups". Yep, that's the word ketchup with an "s" at the end, because it's plural! "Fries and Ketchups" is an order of fries - nothing too interesting, really - and four different types of ketchup. The ketchups are all infused with some type of oil or actual spices or flavors, and they are all really awesome. The first time I had it, I enjoyed "ginger ketchup", "mandarin orange ketchup", "truffle ketchup", and "spicy ketchup". The flavors have been different each time I've been here (though some have occurred more than once), and I must say that the mandarin orange was good. Like I said to my girlfriend "orange you glad we ordered this"? In the end, I must tell you this: GO HERE. Do NOT listen to the other reviews, unless you like bland, shitty food and have no interest in anything interesting or new. The great guru of television and food, Anthony Bourdain, hates "fusion", and for the most part, I must agree with him... But this is an amazing exception to that rule.

This is a great spot when you are in the mood for something different and not too filling. It's located in old Ellicott City so parking is never an easy thing. You will have to get lucky and find a spot on the street or in one of the lots and walk in to Tiber Alley to get to the Rumor Mill. It's a small establishment with a nice layout and ambiance to it. There is a bad downstairs and a small dinning area upstairs. If you aren't familiar with the place they are a Tapas Bar so they only have small plate dishes. You won't get full off any one thing so if you are hungry make sure you order a few things. They have a interesting drink menu that includes a variety of infused vodka, tequila, whiskey, and gin. They combine many of them in the signature drinks. I tried the blood orange vodka and it was excellent. For food I ordered some shrimp dumplings that were delicious. My friend got and grilled Brussel sprouts and I tried a few, also delicious. They have a nice selection of vegetarian and vegan options. The staff are very friendly and by chance we met the Chef Mathew Malonie, hope I spelled his name correctly. He was very knowledgable and more than willing to explain any of his dishes we had questions about. I highly recommend this establishment.

This is a great little spot. The food is incredibly well-prepared and creative every single time. The only thing I don't like about the place is the décor and the overall cheap feeling of the tables (even the ceilings and lighting)! Doesn't match the quality of the food. With a little investment in the décor/lighting, refinishing the floors, etc. I think the place would be packed.

Hmmm the rumor mill...well let me start with the food. The chopped Caesar salad is the best salad I've ever had. It sounds like really a salad? But you have to go to experience it. The combination of the banana peppers and the onions. Just goodness. I've also had the calamari--it's okay. It has bacon in like a chili sauce. I've had other small plates during my visits, and I've never had a bad meal. However...the drinks and when they're open are kinda suspect to me. So this fusion bar....while the bartender is very knowledgable about the various liquor, I just wasn't all that impressed with any of it. Just tasted like run of the mill rail liquor. The other thing is when they open and close. I don't know, but it seems that a restaurant in this prime location should draw a decent consistent crowd. Instead, going in some nights makes you think you're in a restaurant on a dirt path road in a town of 20! They close down pretty early because of a lack of patrons. It just seems weird being in the heart of Old Ellicott City they can't draw a more consistent decent crowd than what I've seen the times I've been. While the drinks are so so, the food is definitely good.

This is strictly tapas. If you're very hungry, either order a mixture of a lot of things or come prepared to eat "appetizer like". Your bill can add up ordering more than one if you're planning on filling up. I had crab dumplings & calamari blt which were good. It was a party of 7 so we passed our plates around to try different things. Can't go wrong with sweet potato fries. We passed around our beverages too. We all got a flavored vodka & they are strong! It is NOT a mixed drink! May come back for restaurant week or something. When I'm hungry and it's my first time somewhere, I would prefer to be satisfied (especially for the price) vs wanting to eat more at home.

Great food great service! I will say that it is definitively off the main road and truly down an ally. Doesn't look like much but the duck and cherries, chopped ceasear, crab dumplings, poppers, and short ribs were all very good. Let me not forget the creme brulee and key like tart. A must visit again!

So where do I start, I guess you could say on a dreary rainy day in Ellicott city. My friends and I decided to check out Chef Matthew Milani at the Rumor Mill. After being seated our lovely waitress ran through the daily specials and took our drink orders. Our group started with a glass of chardonnay "grand estates," a biscottitini (rum. vanilla vodka, Irish cream, hazelnut liqueur and a splash of cream, served on the rocks), and a Root Beer vodka Martini. Note: the Rumor Mill infuses their vodka, which includes a multitude I've different flavors including some crazy flavors like jalapeno, root beer, and blood orange. And they also give you the ability to mix and match your own drink from their list of infused vodka they currently have on hand. After placing our drink order we started out with a few tapas. This is a tapas place, so keep that in mind if you deside to give this joint a try. First we ordered a side of crispy sweet potato fries tossed in a light cinnamon butter sauce. These fries alone should be a requirement for everyone eating at the rumor mill. They're almost like eating at dessert. Next tapa was grilled cilantro beef, this delightful dish was carefully prepared and arranged in one long strand resembling an extra long sushi roll. It was served with alternating beef and cucumber slices dredged in a light cilantro virgin olive oil. The third tapa we ordered was an oldie but goodie, the crab dumplings. Keep in mind these are small plates so luckily our group of three had just enough dumplings to go around. These dumplings were filled with lump crab meat marinated and seasoned with Old Bay, Dijon goat cheese, and cooked golden brown; then served with a side of sweet soy sauce. Next, we ordered the chicken thigh; consisting of one single lightly flowered, pan fried thigh, served with sweet Thai chili sauce, black bean, and a honey mustard sauce. The thigh was perfectly cooked tender and juicy with just the perfect amount of salt and pepper. Our next choice was the slow roasted and glazed in teriyaki barbecue sauce ribs. These ribs had a nice smoky flavor to them; get still have a sweet and very flavorful taste. We then ordered this shrimp and potatoes, which consisted of three large shrimp served over warm fingerling potato salad made with sausage, tomatoes and caramelized onions, all dressed with roasted garlic and sherry vinaigrette. The final tapa we ordered was the calamari BLT. This by far was my favorite of all the tapas served. It consisted of a generous portion of calamari rings lightly breaded in Panko, then quickly fried and then tossed with arugula, diced tomatoes, and pecan wood smoked bacon; served with a ring of Thai chili sauce. Of course after eating this great meal, our helpful waitress pointed out the desert specials to us for the evening. One of our party chose the white chocolate specialty desert of the night, while I went with the chai tea bread pudding, and our other friend chose the three scoops, ice cream platter. What a great way to end the evening. This is a great restaurant, with a romantic vibe. Is a great place to spend quality time with friends, family, co-workers, and that special someone on a cold dreary night.

I've been coming to The Rumor Mill for years, and I've not once been let down. I'm not a good Yelper, but it's about damned time I dropped a few notes on what I consider the best restaurant in Howard County. I could go on and on about Matt's regular menu, the duck and cherries, the 48-hour short rib, the Brussels sprouts... but, today I'm reviewing the amazing meal I had on Christmas Eve. I got to speak with Matt several times in the weeks leading up to the Feast of Seven (or so) Fishes, he shared some of his ideas with me and how the conceptualization of his menu was going. I, and everyone else who got to experience the Feast would not be let down that night. I started with the corn & crawfish chowder... the roasted corn popped in my mouth, the crawfish were beautiful and the creamy, perfectly seasoned chowder was a great way to start my Feast. My next dish was the crab risotto, and after the first bite, I knew I should have saved it for last. The only word I can use to describe this risotto is "perfect". Perfectly cooked rice, perfectly seasoned, perfect chunks of backfin, the truffled crab claws garnishing the top were my favorite part. They were shelled up to the pincer, so I got to enjoy the salty crabiness all in one bite. This risotto was a perfect dish. The shrimp sliders were next, and I remember talking to Matt about these a few weeks before the dinner. I'm glad he decided to grind up the shrimp and bind it into a patty to make a real slider. The spicy ketchup and vinegar slaw that topped the patty were the perfect pairing. The only let down was the bun... I can't remember where he said they were from; but, based on the appearance and texture, one could think they were from the grocery store. My fourth dish was the grilled swordfish. The fish itself was forgettable, not because of the preparation or anything done in the kitchen, but because it was the same swordfish I've had in a hundred different restaurants. That being said, I love swordfish and it was exactly as I would expect to have it prepared for my face. It was served over a mushroom ragu and topped with a mushroom cream sauce; these were the star of the dish! I love me some fungi and these were so fresh and earthy. A very good portion too, so I was not let down at all. By this point, I was not feeling dessert, but my favorite bartender told me the apple pie bread pudding was based off of her grandmother's apple pie... who can say no to that. I was a bit too excited to dig in when it was placed in front of me, so I forgot to photograph it. I don't think they have digital scratch and sniff yet, so the picture really wouldn't have done anything for you. I was again treated to one of the best meals I could ask for. Besides Matt's culinary chops and his local, creative, and inspired menu... the staff at The Rumor Mill are some of the best trained and friendly people I've had the pleasure of meeting. I hope everyone at TRM had a great holiday season and I can't wait to come back and see what's next.

UPDATE: Now this is too funny! After I wrote this review, I read Janet D's review (about the nasty chef who yells at his staff) and I wondered if the guy we dealt with was, in fact, the chef. So I checked out their website and, sure enough, his pic is right there. Chef Milani. I have no doubt Janet's review is right on the mark. Not a nice guy. Poor staff! Who knows - maybe he can cook. But I'd rather spend my money somewhere else. Fortunately, there are lots of other great places to eat in Ellicott City. ORIGINAL REVIEW: In all fairness, this review is more for the bad attitude and service (not the quality of the food or atmosphere). We had a group of about 20 ladies for a bachelorette party. I tagged along with a friend - didn't really know the bride to be. I know the bride's mom through a friend. Our future bride was having a great time - gracious towards all of her friends, dressed tastefully and made a joke out of standing on a bar at the Phoenix just for the sake of taking a picture (just not her style to get crazy and actually dance on a bar). We then made our way to Rumor Mill at 11pm (Sat night) with the intent to have one round of drinks and some clean fun. Before one drink was served, the owner came out and told us, no games and put the props away (btw, the "props" consisted of a pair of panty hose holding an orange that the bride had to drag across the floor, attempting to tap another orange into a cup...nothing obscene at all). And the place was nearly empty so it's doubtful we'd have bothered anyone. As we were leaving, I told him, "Whoever makes the rules - you should tell them...it's a bar.". He then responded, "I make the rules. It's not a bar. It's a restaurant. And it's mine." He then added, "We don't do bar crawls.". I told him, "But it's a BAR..." and he again said the exact same thing (maybe he rehearses it?), "It's not a bar. It's a restaurant. And it's mine.". Well...poor guy. He has no idea what he owns. Maybe I should tell him that someone painted a sign on the front window that says, "The Rumor Mill - Fusion Bar & Restaurant". When we said we would take our business elsewhere, he said he didn't need our business because he just serviced a wedding party that day that he made 10K off of. My impression of this guy was that he was having a bad day and we got to see his nasty side because of it. He seemed insecure and full of self importance with the "it's mine" and "I just made 10K off of a wedding today" comments. I don't think he knows how bad it sounds. Or maybe he doesn't care. But at the end of the day, no one knows or cares that this guy owns one little bar...uh...wait...sorry...I meant to say "restaurant".

We've now been back 3 more times in the last 3 months, bringing 3 other couples, and everyone has loved the Rumor Mill. Chef Matthew has come out to introduce himself and chat, and we've been impressed all the way around: food is creative and excellent, with very few exceptions, service (esp. Kelly) is top of the line, drinks are interesting and tasty, and it's a comfortable place. Things you gotta try: Kobe beef sliders, stuffed jalapeno poppers, caesar or asparagus-cashew salads, fresh lightly-fried local oysters, roasted Brussels sprouts, brie with inventive toppings. Great specials have included the sauteed Chilean sea bass. Desserts including blueberry crisp and that smooth and dense chocolate-peanut butter tart. Things you might skip: tuna tartare (chopped and lacking flavor, not what we expected), crab dumplings (not bad, but there are better things here). The drink menu is worth some serious consideration by itself. We are now starting to invent special occasions so we can go back!

This is a small plates restaurant. Be prepared to order a bunch of stuff and share. The menu changes seasonally, so I although I can tell you about what we ate, it may not be on the menu next time. The service was perfectly attentive and not over bearing. They have house infused vodka and the bartender will gladly recommend drinks/flavor combos. We had the tempura asparagus with sriracha dipping sauce and the roasted brussels sprouts with apple and fig vinaigrette. The Beef short ribs and Duck and Cherries were also delicious but the star of the night was the pork belly. It had a crispy exterior yet melted in your mouth. It came sitting in a pool of wonderful apple sauce with a flavor that was out of this world. (If they sold that stuff in bottles, I would buy it.) We considered ordering a 2nd pork belly, but decided to get dessert instead. They make their own ice cream, which changes based on the chefs whims. Tonight was a trio of white chocolate baileys, dark chocolate, and extra virgin olive oil. I know you're thinking that EVOO ice cream sounds weird, but trust me, it's great. We also shared the blueberry crisp which came with a scoop of ice cream and homemade caramel. It's too good to share. Order your own.

The staff was warm and friendly, particularly Holly, our hostess. Because the weather was so icy, there was only one other couple dining besides our party of four, so we took advantage and tried most of the dishes on the menu. The food by Chef Matt Milani did not disappoint, from the warm Mediterranean olives to the assorted brie with tasty toppings like sweet jalapeño or bacon jam, to the ribs to the crusted trout, to the house-made ice creams, spicy chocolate crème brulee and peanut butter-chocolate torte desserts. They have specialized drinks that I'll try the next time when I'm not driving ... but that didn't stop me from enjoying a warm malbec. Because it was a slow night, Chef Matt checked up on our table for feedback. We had praise galore. The celebrity chefs have got nothing on The Rumor Mill. This was the best dining experience I've had in Maryland, period. I shall return.

Cocktails are great, they frequently have specials and happy hour deals and if you don't see what you want the bartenders have no problem making you something custom. Brie cheese sampler, duck, oysters, and sweet potato fries are all delicious. Staff is excellent and the decor is great. It's a little pricey but definitely worth coming.

Our second visit to The Rumor Mill last night confirmed that the first was no fluke. We were reconnecting with an old friend of mine and since Ellicott City was close for them I made reservations here. We were greeted warmly and made to feel totally at home. Our server Kelly was completely knowledgeable on the menu, the specials and the extensive offerings from the bar. And the food? From the soup and salad to the dessert, the passion for creating outstanding small plates that delivered big flavor profiles was obvious. Standouts at our table included the asparagus soup, pork belly, crab dumplings and beef ribs. The chef came by our table once during service and again as we were leaving. His interest in our experience was sincere and open. We will return to this gem soon to try the other plates that we just didn't have room for.

The Rumor Mill is ONE OF A KIND! Chef Matt and his staff are second to NONE! The flavor combinations you will experience here will have you singing at the table. This restaurant makes the BEST scallop in the baltimore area!! And make sure you try it in combination with the cucumber salad that it is served with. One of the current menu features is a GRILLED ceasar salad where the lettuce itself is grilled! Make sure that you ask for the specials for the evening as Chef Matt ALWAYS comes up with some tantalizing dish that adds a wonderful touch to the already fantastic menu! The flavors are AMAZING! Ambiance is perfect for ANY occasion. Fantastic bartenders that use the house infused vodkas, gins and bourbons with a certain mastery. Aside from the fantastic food and drink, the staff at Rumor Mill is ALWAYS there to invite you in and take EXCELLENT care of every patron. If you have never been to Rumor Mill, TRUST ME this is a place you HAVE to try at least once. You will NOT be disappointed and it WILL quickly become your new favorite.

I was so deeply hopeful about this place. Both the food and drink menu looked awesome. My friends and I came in to celebrate a birthday. We started out very well with french fries and ketchup (Strawberry, Pumpkin Spice, ?Old Bay? and 1 I cannot recall), brie medallions and sweet potato fries. I ordered the "duck and cherries" for myself and it was executed fairly well. The biggest problem was the price of everything: $9 for a small plate of fries with ketchups, $13 for maybe 3 oz of duck breast and 10 cherries. The drinks were also expensive but not outrageous. The dessert course was ill thought out and not good. We had the hazelnut composition (too much ganache and too heavy), banana wontons (YUCK), and ice cream selection. The worst by far was the ice cream selection; the preserved lemon ice cream was TERRIBLE. Our server later confessed that the staff had tried to convince the chef to change it before service, but the chef did not heed their words. I am all for being experimental but to sell this swill to customers is a big shame. Three small quenelles of ice cream: 8 dollars The Rumor Mill is a restaurant that is trying to accomplish too much. The chef is all about fusion and has a lot of pie in the sky ideas, but drops the ball on execution. Our server also seemed afraid of getting yelled at by this guy, when we asked to omit a bacon topping she got skittish and suggested we not order the dish so she would not get yelled at by the chef. Chef: I appreciate that you are pedigreed and all but hire a pastry consultant and be nice to your staff. There are better restaurants in Howard County for $60/pp, do yourself a favor and do not submit to the whims this guy.

I ate here last night for a birthday dinner with friends. Between 4 of us our bill was $180. We each had 1-2 drinks and a small amount of food as the portions were so tiny. Yes, this is a tapas place, but 5 stalks of asparagus? 4 tiny bites of pork belly? Everything was tasty, but small. When we asked for more bread to finish up the salmon spread, we were charged for it. I'm sad as my first visit was so delicious! The staff was sweet and helpful and the restaurant was full, I just wish the portions were larger or the prices lower to reflect the amount of food to order to feel full.

My fiancee and I loved the Rumor Mill! After having some Christmas inspired coffee from the Bean Hollow around the corner, we headed to the Rumor Mill. We were quickly seated in the romantic atmosphere. The variety and uniqueness of each plate was pleasantly refreshing. Also, the cocktail / vodka list is quite expansive with a good selection of craft beer. We shared the sweet potato fries, crab dumplings, calamari BLT, cilantro beef, and finished with the chocolate peanut butter tart. All the plates were exceptional and we were stuffed. However, I felt the calamari could have be more salty. Our waitress was very pleasant and quick with our plates and drinks. After reading some of the other reviews for this restaurant, I was excepting it to be very expensive, but its really not expensive at all especially for the meal that you are receiving. For the two of us, along with drinks, it was only $60. Not too sure what most people expect from dining out... It should be noted that almost half their menu if gluten-free (GF). I highly recommend this restaurant and we will be bringing others with us next time.

All the food was good, but my mouth was confused. It's a share-plates kind of place (can you have non-Spanish tapas?) but there isn't any cohesion or general theme uniting the dishes. Each person in my party picked a few dishes. This resulted in eating fries, followed by tuna tartare, duck, and steak. On a side note, I thought the fries were infused with ketchup (cue angel's choir), but it turns out that the ketchup is infused with various flavours, not the fries. So we paid $9 for a plate of fries with 4 different ketchups. They were delicious, but that's just a bit excessive. We got a peanut butter cheese cake sort of thing for desert and it was truly life changing. Overall, it's a cute place with good food, but you'll be paying more than you want (especially if you get the fries. really, just don't get the fries). Get the peanut butter desert thing.

The Rumor Mill, tucked away in Ellicott City among the antique stores, this place is quaint and fits in with Main Street. Came here for a GNO, first off, love their selection of drinks. My granacha was excellent! Their coffee and cream drink was dangerous. So was their peach drink, it did not taste as though it had alcohol. Their food menu is good, I had their sweet potato fries and the calamari BLT. I loved both! Flavorful and tasty, the calamari was not salty at all and paired well with the crispy bacon bits. Now I will say, my friend had the cilantro beef, the beef had an off putting flavor to it. The texture of the meat was not appealing. I enjoyed my meal for sure, and their beet salad looked amazing! I would order the calamari again and again! Their dessert menu is small BUT full of flavor! Their bread pudding which was chocolate peanut butter with malt ice cream, it was so so good! Come here, it is a great place!

The Rumor Mill is not exactly the kind of place I'd take my spouse, but I went here recently with a group of friends. I could see myself returning for a drink at the bar, but I doubt I'd go back for dinner-- the food was pricey and nothing really looked/sounded appealing to me. They have a large selection of infused vodka and gin. I had a rosemary infused gin that was very crisp and delicious. For $9 that was enough for me, I took my time savoring it. While I didn't eat anything, my friends did. Since we started at the bar and moved up to a table, I think something was lost in translation about splitting up the check. The waitress was very passive aggressive about taking payment on multiple credit cards. She made sure to make mention of how difficult and time consuming this was for her at least five times. There is no need for that. Either stand by your policy to not accept more than four credit cards, or choose to make an exception and don't complain about it. It makes it very awkward for your customers.

This is the restaurant that could.... have. It has all the elements of a trendy foodie restaurant- cute old town, old remodeled house, and tapas! Unfortunately, I found it overpriced and overall bland. Atmosphere: 2 story building with dining upstairs and bar downstairs. I imagine it could get loud on weekends- sound travels far too well. But on a Thursday night only about 10 total diners. Service: pretty good. No complaints. Food: hmmmmmm I got the blood orange blossom for my drink. I was expecting a sangria-like drink. It was more like a martini- that is to say, pretty strong. But not really a complaint, just unexpected. Started off with sweet potato fries- delicious! But can you really go wrong with fries? Then spicy pumpkin soup. Interesting. Was it good? I still can't decide. Tuna tartare with mushroom bacon. Good try... but bland. Honey miso scallops. I was expecting something epic based on the yelp tips. I found it cooked well, but couldn't really taste the honey or the miso. Cilantro beef. Beef was dry. It was sitting in cilantro oil which just tasted like olive oil. Crab wontons with goat cheese. Again, interesting. The wonton skins were too hard and overfried. The goat cheese gives it a tart flavor which I'm not sure worked. Dessert: banana wontons and kahlua ice cream. Tasted fine. Wontons too hard again. Ice cream was good, but so is Breyers ice cream. So overall: very ambivalent, definitely wouldn't revisit without a strong prerogative. Oh and bill was about 75 $ for two including tip. I was not full. Ate a snack afterwards. Lame.

The service here was fantastic. We had a wonderful waitress who chatted with us and made great recommendations. The food and drinks are really good. The ribs were amazing. The fried oysters were delicious, as were the Brussel sprouts. The restaurant is in a cool location and is very nicely decorated. We will definitely come here again.

Finally, I got the chance to stop by on a normal night and do an updated review of their menu. I mentioned before that their a.g. cashew salad was good, and that was one of two dishes that we started with. I didn't remember the green beans from the last time, but the sauce they serve it in is so good! We asked to keep the plate out to dip everything in the sauce. It's a great starter to share. We also tried their jalapeno poppers. They were bright and creamy at the same time and didn't last long between us. I loved the large, fresh jalapenos used. We then had a 1/2 lb of their mussels, in a large bowl of a Thai-inspired coconut sauce ( I believe). Whatever it was, that coconut sauce was so amazing, bread was brought out shortly to mop it up. One of the best things about the Rumor Mills is the gradual pace of the meal. We sat in awe of the mussels for a bit, then decided to move on to something a little heftier, like the Kobe sliders. For a tapas-style place, I don't remember the sharing portions being so generous, but that may just be something they have been working on in response to reviews. We received four medium-rare sliders that were very yummy. I rarely eat red meat so it was nice to be able to get that burger taste without feeling like I committed to eating 1/2 a pound of beef. The pickles were a nice touch, but the onions kind of get lost under the patty, and there's something bright missing from the dish as a whole. I'm sure getting buns the right size for sliders is no simple feat, and I know they prefer to have all the breads sourced from local bakeries, but even so, these buns felt a little commercial. You'd expect something a little out of the box, but I also know that the sliders are one of those menu items intended to sell and help their menu be more approachable to every customer. They tasted good and I put them in my face. Mission accomplished. We knew that the owner gets special ash aged goat cheese from a Maryland cheese maker, so we then tried another special that was brought to the menu, the stuffed pepper. I think the beef inside was a bit bland, but the goat cheese was what made the sauce pop. For dessert we ordered the chocolate peanut butter tart to share and that thing was a monster! It was also beyond delicious, and I love the plating with the smear of straight-up pb. I felt like that was a fun play on desserts that take themselves too seriously. Everyone knows the best thing after dinner is just going to the pantry and scooping peanut butter from the jar. Some of use get fancy with chocolate or oreos, and others make do with whatever silverware was in the sink or fingers. But this dessert promised peanut butter and it delivered, and is a definite must-try, coming from someone who is not a big dessert person.

Dinner here was very good, our waitress was very friendly and informative. The infused drinks were fun too. The chocolate peanut butter tart was amazing. I really enjoyed that every plate was unique and different from the last. And sharing the food was fun too.

I am reviewing this restaurant based on our experience with the hostess today. I can't review the food or our dining experience because the hostess refused to seat us. We arrived around 4:30. We were a party of 5. I walked to the hostess stand and asked for a table. THE PLACE WAS DEAD! She rudely and abruptly told me that there were no tables available. I looked around. There were empty tables everywhere. There was no one waiting for a table. We were really the only ones standing there in the front besides one couple at the bar. She continued to tell me that the restaurant can't accommodate parties of 5. We offered to split up and sit separately. She told us no. There were no tables available and that there were reservations for later. I was so offended. We all walked out. It left a really bad impression. I swear, she just didn't want us there. I've never had a hostess treat me so poorly and do such a bad job. I walked out, went on Open Table and Yelp , made reservations for our party of 5 for 10 minutes later and it took it. I was so angry!

I don't get the bad reviews. I've never had an experience with the Rumor Mill that wasn't delicious. I'm not certain what the expectation is, but I tend to focus on, "food that I can't make/make as well on my own, served to me by people who do not suck". Call me crazy. Plus, they're infusing gin now. Be still my heart. Gin runs wild through my veins. The cucumber gin in a gin and tonic is delectable. They're also infusing cucumber with lime, too, but I haven't tried it yet. For those I have tried, the rosemary is earthy, and the "Arnold Palmer" makes for a surprisingly refreshing and balanced gin and tonic. We shared (it's small plates, after all. Not "tapas" or "Asian fusion" like some Yelpers have called it...) yellow beet salad with microgreens and the cutest and tastiest blue cheese "squidges", a tomato tartlet I may have licked the plate clean of, and two of the specials: a brie and thai chile/toasted cashew green beans that tasted like the Szechaun green beans of your dreams. The cashews were infinitely better than peanuts and I'm never eating the normal ones ever again. I've had a little of everything at Rumor Mill, from green curry to salad to chocolate concoctions, several vodkas, the "blossom" drinks, and of course the gin. It's always a pleasing and ready choice when I'm in the area and seeing people, and I'd happily take a date here. Not that that's crazily likely, but that's a reflection on me and not on the establishment.

When you read their menu you will instantly notice the imaginative and thoughtful pairing of flavors within each dish. Their selection of dishes is pretty wide in comparison to many fine dining/artisan restaurants. To top it off, the staff was all very friendly and hospitable, chef is very health conscious as evident by the number of gluten-free and vegan dishes. The food quality and flavors were excellent! We are so happy to have celebrated our 13th anniversary with them and are looking forward to bringing other loved ones to share the experience!

Rumor Mill is FANTASTIC. A great place to go on a date, or to get together with some friends for a drink and small bite to eat, I highly recommend Rumor Mill. Food Favs: 1. Warm A.G. & Cashew Salad - yes, yes, yes!!!!! It's delicious in its simplicity. The asparagus and green beans are perfectly cooked through but still have just enough crunch. I order this every time I go to Rumor Mill and always end up scraping the remaining teriyaki-drenched cashews off the plate to savor every last morsel. 2. Duck & Cherries - I could get this just for the brined cherries. The sous-vide duck is succulent and pairs nicely with the pomegranate oil and the cherries. 3. Tuna Tartare - Any tuna sushi lovers will appreciate this. The lemon-soy vinaigrette cuts the fattiness of the avocado. Finally, the tortilla chips offer a contrasting crunch to the tender tuna and creamy avocado. Most of the other foods are great; their SMALL SIZE and LARGE PRICE TAG turn many customers away. I would visit more often if food items were cheaper and/or larger. Other good foods I like from here: mushroom tart, potato & spinach salad, crab dumplings, cilantro beef (small, but well-cooked, with a nice smokiness), seared tuna (if you want tuna, I'd go for the tartare), baked brie, terikyai bbq ribs (they're good, but I always feel so disappointed with the small portion), and kobe sliders. In my opinion, the following dishes aren't worth it: Stuffed avocado - sounds good, right? Massively disappointing. My waiter warned me that many customers don't care for the firm avocado which results from deep-frying. That, paired with the underwhelming flavor combo, cements the fact that I'll not be getting this one again. Fries & Fusion ketchups - different ketchups (e.g. chipotle infused) are cool, but does this really warrant a $9 price for fries? Methinks not. The "snacks" plates (olives, edamame, sweet potato fries) are passable, but nothing to rave about. Not bad for $5. VODKA! I don't think I've ever ordered a beer or glass of wine here because... well, it's a vodka fusion bar! Give it a chance, even if you don't fancy yourself a vodka drinker (read some of the other testimonials on this page!) There are a number of staple flavors that are always there, and others are rotated in. Classic fruity flavors like cranberry, pomegranate, and grapefruit are available. For the more adventurous, I suggest trying some savory flavors like Thai Chili, Olive (great mixed into a dirty martini), and Soy Sauce. I often drink mine on ice, though they'll gladly serve your drink neat or mixed into a cocktail. Sadly, no samples- LAME! That means you're stuck with a vodka even if you don't like it. To say the first flavor I ordered, lemongrass, was disappointing, would be a gross understatement. Start with a safe flavor before venturing out for new varieties. The wait staff are usually knowledgeable, though due to the large number of vodka offerings, may have to reference a vodka list if you're dining upstairs away from the giant master board of current flavor offerings. The restaurant is quaint and the bar a little too small for a large group, but offers options to have a casual get together with friends or a romantic rendezvous with someone special. Whichever one you're looking for, make sure you come to Rumor Mill at some point.

So this was our 2nd time visiting this awesome place in the last 3 weeks. First, the staff there are so pleasant. Everyone smiles and is really friendly. Kelly was our waitress both visits and she was super friendly and knowledgeable and made great recommendations. The chef/owner also came to visit us and was really friendly and kind! The manager also stopped to talk with us as we were leaving and she made us feel so welcome there (as did the rest of them!). On to the food...I swear the brussels sprouts must be drugged. I know it sounds crazy, but they are really so delicious. The 2nd visit, we actually ordered 3 servings for only 2 of us (crazy, right?!?!?!), but we had enjoyed them so much our 1st visit we couldn't bear to split them. We also ordered the brie which was amazing. It was the first time my husband or I had tried brie, and we both loved it - it was topped with 4 different flavors. We also tried the salad and tuna tartar which were very good also. Service - top notch, as well as the flavor of the foods and drink - you just can't beat stopping by here.

Girlfriend and I came here for the first time yesterday. I ordered the adult root beer and the butterscotch espresso to drink. The root beer was crazy strong, but did indeed taste like what its name implies....like boozey root beer. The butterscotch espresso was deliciously mixed well. We ordered the tomato tartlet (amazing), tempura mushrooms (stingy on the sauce and refused to give us extra), crab dumplings (a little overcooked but flavor wasn't bad), calamari b.l.t. (delicious but could have used more arugula and sweet chile sauce), honey miso scallops (oh my god melt in your mouth good). The service was perfectly fine. Overall, we really enjoyed the experience and look forward to going back.

DRINKS: they have like 50 different infused vodka's...if you pay $5 to join the club, they write down the different flavors of vodkas you tried and at the end of 20 i think you get 1 free drink and a T-shirt....but you have to try different flavors, no repeats will count toward your 20. the drinks were flavorful and strong!! haven't had the entree food but the sweet potato fries were very good. parking is also a bit hard. you can find parking on the street...the place is not easily seen either..it is behind Phoenix Emporium.

How much do I not like this restaurant, let me count the ways. I don't usually like giving scathing reviews of restaurants, but this is one of my least favorite ever. I had been here a few times many years ago and had some pretty unmemorable dinners. This evening, I joined some family and friends for dinner. To be honest, I was pretty surprised that this restaurant was even still around, but I was willing to give it another shot. The evening started off with there being no highchair. I know, I know, it's not really for kids. However, we had called ahead and mentioned that we were bringing an infant and never once was it mentioned that there wasn't accommodations for her. This meant, that we had to juggle her through the whole meal, probably adding to our annoyance that it wasn't that great. So, we ordered some drinks and an appetizer while we waited for our party. My husband ordered a beer which came with a glass that had a ton of dishwater still in it. Ew? Is that supposed to add to the flavor of my microbrew? We knew then, that we were in trouble. The waiter was so uninspiring. No smiles. I bet applebees describes the dishes better then he did. "Is the steak good?" "yup." He's lucky gratuity was included. My mom went to order one of their infused vodkas "What kind do you have?" she asked. The waiter pulled a list out of his pocket of 50-some choices, and when asked for a suggestion, wasn't really interested in helping. She said the vodka was interesting, but I did notice that she didn't finish her drink. You can tell this restaurant was TRYING. All the new fashionable foodie buzz-words. sou vide. infused. It all sounded interesting. What did we get? Dry and flavorless mussels, weird tasting steak in cilantro oil, and dry pork ribs. The ribs did have a nice tangy BBQ sauce, but it wasn't enough to save them. The desserts weren't too bad. The presentation was really nice. You can tell that's where they spent their energy, and it showed. I can tell by the reviews on yelp, that this restaurant doesn't care about what its customers are saying. There are so many other restaurants in this area that are deserving of my business. I won't be back.

So after reading the positive reviews and the negative reviews my wife and I decided to try out The Rumor Mill. After being promptly seated it took 5 minutes before our waitress showed up, and we were one of 5 tables with what appeared to be a 3 waitress staff. After the initial 5 minutes of just sitting at our table service picked up and had no further complaints with the service. The wife tried a strawberry lemonade vodka, and was relatively satisfied, she was much happier with the regular strawberry lemonade. I had an adult root beer which was fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only thing that was absolutely terrible was the crem brule, with a burnt sugar top. Undoubtedly the worst crem brule I've ever had. The cilantro beef was flavorless and literally sitting in oil. The honey miso scallops tasted like over cooked very salty scallops, and nothing more. The duck and cherries was alright, the duck tasted like rather dry white meat turkey. The cherries were good. The shrimp and potatoes dish as well as the cashew salad were in fact good, shrimp was okay potatoes were delicious and the cashew salad was definitely tasty. For what I got, it was not even close to worth the hundred dollars the meal cost. I'd like to say the executive chef/owner was having a bad night, but that isn't a very good excuse. Especially not for serving 2 good dishes out of 6. We would not recommend The Rumor Mill. Edit: we were contacted by the restaurant, they thoroughly seemed to want to make it right. It was a trip to get out to The Rumor Mill, my wife and I are both active duty military and are both major foodies so we try not to eat at the same place twice while we are stationed here... unless we love it. That being said, we won't go back due to how far away it is. I'll raise the rating from 2 stars to 3 as getting a call from the restaurant is definitely notable.

I should have listened to past reviewers! I went with my fiance on a Sunday night - we walk past the place all the time and it looks very interesting from the outside. The menu sounds really promising as well. We ordered crab wontons, cilantro beef, and kobe sliders. I asked the waitress if that would be a decent sized dinner and she said, 'I don't know. The plates are different sizes.'... ummmm ok? She also snickered at us every time we asked her a question or she said something to us. The crab wontons would have been really good, but they were still frozen in the middle. Literally, I crunched down on icy crab. The cilantro beef was pretty good, although I think there was waaay too much oil on the plate. The kobe sliders were delicious- the pickles were amazing, but again, the top of the rolls were still cold, like they came out of the fridge. Very underwhelmed. I think if they were more focused on customer service and the quality of their food instead of the appearance, this could be a really great restaurant. I however, will not be returning.

The Rumor Mill gets better with age. I had been years ago and didn't rush back. This trip shows that the Rumor Mill has really gotten great at what they do. Definitely worth a trip back for anyone who has not been in a while.

Tapas are small portion plates that you order a few of and share with everyone. This restaurant was fun and so good. Our waitress was helpful in explaining how things work and she made sure to bring things out one at a time so we could really enjoy our plates. The food was so good. I would recommend the crab dumplings and the sweet potato fries. I would recommend a visit to this place.

Rumor me this: Vodka is my least favorite spirit, but this place is starting to change my mind. At our last visit it was lingonberry, ginger, earl grey and vanilla: only the last one was disappointing, tasting of artificial flavor and cloying sweetness. The others were smooth, flavorful and unique -- just like the grapefruit brulee, chili pepper and fig vodkas we'd had on a previous night. And if none of these sound great to you, relax -- there are fifty more on the board, and they'll let you sample before you order a full pour. This last visit was the first time we'd dined there, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover a charming balcony upstairs, complete with Asian-themed decor and a pretentiously odd essay painted on the wall. (A soliloquy about the factors that create a great dining experience, the upshot seemed to be, "It might not be our fault if this meal isn't great." Let's stick to art prints, please.) The food was very good. Crab wontons were crispy on the outside, creamy within; the salad with candied ginger and goat cheese was refreshing and well-seasoned. The kobe sliders came medium-rare, which would not have been my choice (I prefer medium-well; the server didn't ask) but their texture was velvety and in the low lighting, the pink didn't alarm me quite so much. Perfectly topped, they made a meal for two with a side of edamame and house-smoked sea salt. I talked my husband into honey-cinnamon bread pudding for dessert, and although it's not his favorite I didn't dare put my fork down for fear it would disappear from under my nose! Our server was majorly spacey, though not rude. He had a handwritten list of the vodkas which he didn't offer to lend us, so we went back downstairs to peruse the board on our own. (Hey, management: how hard can it be to print a list?) This would be a fun place to host a party: great finger foods, even better drinks and an atmosphere that would be greatly improved with the people you know and love. In fact, the only reason I wouldn't go back right away is that the menu is rather limited, and we ordered pretty much everything we wanted to try. Next season, though, we will be back for sure.

We asked Chef Matt and general manager Lexie to put together a custom four course vegetarian feast for my mother's 65th surprise birthday party. They did an excellent job, working with us to create a varied, exciting menu with my mom's preferences in mind. Lexie's wine pairings were also spot-on, and our server Lauren was friendly and attentive. Our party of seven had a lovely time and thoroughly enjoyed our evening. And the added bonus: we thought the price was quite reasonable!

I thought the food here was really good. The cocktails were so-so. I ordered a creamcicle one and a peach one, both were sugary to the excess. All I could taste was syrup. The pricing is kind of high, but the restaurant is in Ellicott City and most of the restaurants in town are pricey. I would give them another shot because the food was so good.

Went there once and will NEVER go back. The owner is arrogant and acted like a jerk to us. My friend asked for a Miller Lite at the bar and the owner responded with arrogance. "We don't serve Miller Lite here, we serve REAL beer. Here's this thing - it's called a MENU with WORDS on it, read it and you can see what we serve here" in a condescending manner. He refused to serve our friend a Miller Lite, and offered up "here's a can of beer, this is more along the lines of what you would drink". My friend was soooo offended, and afterwards another friend confronted the owner and the owner refused to apologize and said he was enlightening our friend with good beer. Before that, another time, another friend told us a story about getting sliders there and when they asked for ketchup, the owner came out to the table and wanted to know who wanted ketchup and why. He ended up giving them truffle ketchup (charged $1.50 for it!!) after talking to them about you shouldn't put ketchup on the sliders. Don't know why there is this arrogance, this place could be cool , but it seems the management/owner is so caught up in trying to be trendy that it comes off as, and is, condescending.

We loved it! We went on a Wednesday night for my birthday dinner. I had never heard of the restaurant before and I asked my friend for suggestions. Loved it from the second our waitress told us the specials (salmon ceviche!) to the finish with three ice cream flavors. The pumpkin bread pudding was kind of meh, but the entire experience was lovely. We will be back in a heartbeat.

Rumor mill..I don't know how to say this, but I have a food baby, and you're the father. Seriously though, best meal I've had in a long time! My friend and I came here after both having a crappy day but we left with all smiles. We both had the spicy lemonade cocktail (delicious) and started with the Brie sampler; I have no words to describe how good the Brie and bacon marmalade combo is. Then we had the miso scallops; I think I died and went to heaven. We then shared the pork belly and the brussel sprouts; the pork belly was amazing, but sweet baby Jesus, those were the holy grail of brussel sprouts. We finished with the white chocolate amaretto creme brûlée and the the spicy chocolate creme brûlée. The chocolate was good but it had nothing on the white chocolate amaretto. For 2 cocktails, 4 tapas, and 2 desserts we paid around $85 which was not bad at all for the portion and quality of the food. The owner/chef came out and joked around with us for a bit, which made the night that much better. My friend and I are already planning on what we want next time we go, I highly recommend!

We frequent the Rumor Mill and find the food and bar unique and fun. The chef is creative and loves to experiment and share new recipes. The bar staff is great and always eager to help find a new drink combinations. From the first time we walked through the door our experience has been positive. We'll keep coming back.

Cozy and beautiful inside, with lots of potential. The food is ok. But lots of confusion! I am local. I made a reservation for 5 at for Sunday night 8:30 (they suggested) they called me minutes after I called and suggested to change it to 8 since the kitchen closes at 10. So we got there at 8, the are 2 people at the bar. That's it. The dining area was closed. The waiter pointed to the only table that could fit 5 of us. I told them that I made a reservation hoping that she will guide us to a nice cozier table in the dining area, but she said "oh your reservation was at 7:30 and we cancel after 30 minutes) I explained that no, and told her that they call me and ask to change it to 8:00!!! I was angry and I told her "no wonder nobody is here" we ordered though. A few tapas. Ok food. Before 9 she came out at said the kitchen closes at 9! Hmmmm! Do I go back there and take people there? NO, NO AND NO, there are other restaurants and bars around!

This place is trying way too hard to be trendy in every way and it collectively ends up being a confusing, overpriced mess. A friend and I split the following items: tomato tower, tempura asparagus, sous-vide duck and cherries and a chicken sesame peanut ginger bowl. For a place that is supposedly Asian fusion, I'm not really sure where slices of tomato and goat cheese fall in. Also, for $6, I know I could find fresher and more ripe tomatoes and better goat cheese at the farmers market for less. They must have forgot to salt the tempura asparagus because it lacked any flavor but oil, while the noodle bowl was utterly swimming in a pool of peanut sauce. We were also told by our waitress that its portion size was supposed to be more generous than the tapas plates; it literally came in a cup sized bowl with four slivers of chicken and a baby's handful of noodles. At $14, I call that a rip off. The duck at least tasted good and was perfectly cooked, but then again, that's why you sous-vide meat, right? The only items that seem to be worth their price tag were the martinis - they were generous in size and in liquor. In that sense, it almost excuses the $7.50 price tag. Also, I think the drink just helped to take up space in my stomach so I didn't leave this place completely starved. Service also plays a huge part in any dining experience, which I think I should note that it was iffy here. We were one of two parties in the entire restaurant, and for some reason they saw fit to seat us back to back with each other. Also, while our waitress was pleasant enough, she was not very attentive. She never bothered to refill our water glasses - with no other parties, what could she possibly have been busy with?? It was only after asking twice did it happen. Oh, and the best part was the blaring music coming from the kitchen. The cooks were rocking out to everything from Rusted Root to Ke$ha to heavy metal. Maybe if they turned the music down a bit, they would have been able to pay attention to the food they were making. Then again, with odd recipes like that, I don't know that it would have helped.

I'm one of the biggest critics of eateries (from service, to food, to presentation) ask my husband. But rarely do I stop to write a yelp review (positive OR negative) after the fact, because time flies and I don't usually get around to sharing my humble opinion. But last night we finally went to Rumor Mill (tucked away on Tiber Alley in downtown Ellicott City) after a long week of shoveling snow and cabin fever during the storm. Friends had given us a gift card many months ago as a thank you for watching their cat, and we cashed in. In short, the server was both really sweet and polished, no notes, nothing, and recited the preparation of each dish and answered questions confidently. Nothing bothers me more than a server who hasn't tasted dishes or has to "go ask". Anyway, we really enjoyed the house-infused vodkas (particularly the white peach). Also had the edamame with four different tasting salts, brussels sprouts, seared tuna over white beans with a shitake mushroom japanese-type spice topping that somehow tasted like bacon although it was bacon-free, mussels and fries, and ended with the hazelnut chocolate "composition". Everything we had was beautiful and had great flavor combinations and textures. We are definitely headed back there to check out more of the infused vodka cocktail offerings and tapas.

I recently moved to Ellicott City from DC and have been telling my mom (from PA) how cute Historic EC is. I wanted to take her there for Mother's Day and was lucky to choose Rumor Mill as our place to have lunch. I'd never been there; so I was going completely by the online reviews (some quite mixed). My mom and I both enjoy places with small plates that we can share and try lots of different things. We were both very pleased with everything we had. Our server was very attentive and friendly, and the pace of the meal was perfect. We started out with the yellow beets. The flavors were great and the blue cheese medallions added a nice kick. We followed that with the calamari b.l.t. This was our favorite dish of the meal. The calamari was cooked perfectly with a light breading that didn't overwhelm or cause the dish to be too greasy. Next, we had the fried oysters. They were very tasty, and the different components and sauces really brought out the flavors. We ended with the baked brie from the dessert menu. There was the option of topping the brie with spicy bacon marmalade or peach compote. We requested if we could have half and half to be able to try both, but our waitress said that wasn't possible. When the dish came out the topping was just spread on top, so it was disappointing that they wouldn't accommodate the simple request. It would have been very easy to do, would have given us something savory and something sweet to complete our meal, and would have made this review 5 stars. We ended up going with the bacon marmalade on the server's recommendation. It was very tasty, but we would have preferred a sweet ending with the peach. All in all, we really enjoyed our experience at Rumor Mill, and will definitely go back again.

THE VODKA Alright, I went to this place blind, not even knowing what I was in for. I walked in and thought, "bummer a vodka bar? I hate vodka...." fast forward 30 minutes. "I LOVE VODKA!!!" They have a great assortment of house-made infused vodka. That's right, they take sweedish fish and let them soak in vodka for days and days until it's just right. Some of the vodka flavors I recall include, toasted marshmallow, chocolate chip cookie, thai chile, tomato, pomegranate, soy sauce, peach, pineapple, mint lemonade, and then your typical fruit flavors like apple, blueberry, ect. OK enough about the alcohol... THE FOOD: Very good but, I think it is a bit over priced. The owner came out twice and brought us decent sized samplers of his "new inventions" i.e. we were his taste testers for creations he wanted to add to the menu and it was free. He was totally open to suggestions and liked to brain storm with us at the table. The food tasted great BUT if I went back it would probably be for a drink and one plate for an appetizer or dessert then I'd go home and make myself dinner because it got expensive QUICK when we went starving. THE SERVICE: Ok, so when we started asking for drink suggestions with the various vodkas the bartender did a great job... when we asked the server questions about the drinks she told us she wasn't old enough to drink and couldn't help us.... this was a disappointment. I started serving when I was 14 years old and continued to serve until I was 22. I couldn't drink for majority of the time but I ALWAYS would say, "let me go get someone who can help you" and I'd pull the bartender or manager over to talk about wine. The place wasn't even busy so it's not like it was a Saturday at dinner time and everyone was tied up. The server didn't really seem like she knew what she was doing and after we ordered the first round of plates she acted like that was all we could order and seemed taken aback when we told her we'd like to make additional selections. All in All... I'd go back, but again only for drinks and appetizers or dessert I would not do an entire meal here again...

The Rumor Mill is def a high end dive of sorts. The owner is great about chatting with guests, talking about food...ideas for new food and he's pretty generous with bringing out free samples to try for things he creates for catering events etc (at least, that was our experience)! The booze is great. Endless cocktail selection. Beer selection is could be broader...but they get bonus points for not carrying Miller Lite or other crappy beers. Plates are small and evenly priced...but that price can climb if you start to order several. All in all, great rest in a unique location. Great place for a date.

My husband and I were really excited to try the Rumour Mill since we have really loved a few tapas places in downtown Baltimore. The experience was just ok, while the prices would suggest that it should be fabulous. We had the mussels with calamari, which had a really delicious tomato/butter/white wine sauce. It was fairly priced. We also had the crab dumplings which had a few shreds of crab meat in them and were filled with 90% air. Needless to say, a bit disappointing. We also had the fish and chips which were very good, but at $12 it seemed a bit overpriced for a 4 ounce serving of battered cod and some shoestring fries. So, my impression is that some of the food is very good, but the prices were a little out of proportion to the portions and food quality. And the decor is a little odd. Lots of award plaques and letters on the wall where I would have loved to have seen something a little warmer and more inviting.

This was one of the best date locations I've seen in a while, and I can't wait to go back. My boyfriend surprised me by bringing us to Rumor Mill and I told him it was the best choice he's made so far!! I started out with an infused vodka drink: Thai Chili vodka with grapefruit juice and grapefruit soda. It blew my mind. My boyfriend asked the waiter about the beer specials and he was super knowledgeable about all the beer there! It was great to have someone to guide him in the direction of what he would enjoy. The food was perfect. As I've stated in an earlier review, I have a ridiculous amount of dietary restrictions. Our waiter was able to find me numerous things on the menu they could either modify to exclude gluten/dairy, or make sure it was completely gluten/dairy free. I'm not deathly allergic to gluten so I said I might try the sweet potato fries. He was so diligent that he went downstairs, asked about the AMOUNT of gluten in the fries, and came back to tell me it might not be a good idea because he wanted me to have a great experience. THAT'S what I call dedication! The ambiance was wonderful, our waiter was attentive, our food was amazing and our drinks were imaginative and delicious. One note to the person who tried to order a Miller Lite and a burger with ketchup at Rumor Mill...don't blame the restaurant. You went to the wrong place.

The best bars are often a little bit off the beaten path, but this place takes the cake. In EC, you have to walk down Main Street until you reach Tiber Alley, which is literally an alley. Once inside, you'll find the inviting bar. The bartenders know their flavored vodka! This place makes its own vodka, with such flavors as bacon and avocado. The chef even came out to socialize with us and told us to visit from time to time. Come on a Sunday when they have ALL DAY happy hour!

Feh - too-trendy, overpriced, and mediocre. Way too many ridiculous "-tinis" on the drink menu, small plates that don't satisfy, and unjustified prices. This place used to be a slightly outdated bistro-type restaurant in bygone years, that while a bit of a relic on its own didn't aspire beyond its capabilities. Rumor Mill is a cliche - Asian fusion "tapas" that is more fluff than substance. Soba noodles - soupy, uninspired. Things stacked and skewered that really didn't deserve the treatment. Prices way out of line with the quality of the food. I don't mind paying for small plates that are exquisite, that are perfect little morsels that bring joy. I hate paying top dollar for small portions of mediocre food.

My husband and I went to Rumor Mill with another couple, and all of us had fabulous meals. The sweet potato fries were incredible, and I had the peanut ginger bowl, which was delicious. My husband tried the ribs and tuna - both very good. I felt it was reasonably priced given the quality and presentation of the food. The portions were small, but I felt they were sufficient. Our waiter was very nice, friendly, and attentive. I really enjoyed the restaurant and will definitely be back!

The good: Really tasty food, although it's a tapas place, so of course the portions are going to be small. The duck sous-vide with cherries was absolutely awesome, as was the cilantro beef. The crab dumplings were okay- the cheese was a little bit overpowering, and we couldn't taste much of the crab. We also ordered lobster "crepes"...when they showed up, they were pretty tasty, but they were in some kind of tortilla-esque wrap, *not* in crepes. The bad: If you go here, don't order drinks. We got our drinks first, which set the tone for the rest of our meal here. Generally tapas places are notorious for making their drinks ridiculously strong, so that you're more willing to pay fifteen bucks for a plate with a couple of artfully arranged shrimp on it or something. We both ordered mojitos. The bartender straight up forgot to add mint leaves to mine, and probably forgot the simple syrup. He also appeared to have misted a couple of spritzes of rum into our drinks. We had eaten almost nothing all day, and the mojitos didn't even get us buzzed. It was like drinking seltzer water with a few straggly dead leaves on the bottom. My drink was so bad that I'm going to have to drink to forget it. The worst part was the fact that I paid nine dollars for something that was less alcoholic than off-brand cough syrup. The ugly: Don't even try to talk to the bartender about his drinks, okay? He is an *artist*, and you just aren't *refined* enough to understand his subtle craft. The table next to us was also complaining about the quality of their drinks, and one guy asked the waitress if she could ask the bartender what was in his drink. Five minutes later, the bartender literally stomped up to where he was sitting and got confrontational about his request. It was really intimidating, rude, and really soured the whole experience for me. I definitely will not be back.

We enjoyed ourselves. The tapas was very good and the cook was good about making sure the food didn't contain any of the things I'm allergic to. The bartender was enthusiastic and enjoyed making our drinks and being creative with us.

Only go here for drinks.Over 50infused vodkas and delicious combinations. The food is either over spiced or bland or not properly paired. The teriyaki ribs were too well done, dry and burned. The fried green tomatoes were bland. They needed salt. The bacon was undercooked and fatty. The sauce on the plate was a brown sugar mayonnaise. Gross. The honey-miso scallops were good and the cucumber salad underneath was even better. Rumor Mill is overpriced and the food is too weird, too expensive and not enough of it. Two drinks, two small plates and one shared plate was $52.

I Give Them ONE STAR, But My Dinner Date Would've Given Them TWO BACKGROUND: NYE 2010 - Menu looked good, super last minute plans, and close to where my beau lives. THE ARRIVAL: Nicely greeted and taken upstairs to our table. A few minutes later our waitress greets us and hands us our menus, explaining the type of service (small plates = tapas). She leaves us to consider our order. FIVE MINUTES LATER: A helper (for lack of better description) provides us water. FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER (20 after we'd been seated): Where is our waitress? FIVE MINUTES LATER: OTHER COUPLE seated in our section. FIVE MINUTES LATER: Where's our waitress? ... Oh, there she is. Waitress takes our order for drinks and food. Waitress THEN walks over to another table and takes their dessert order. Waitress THEN walks over to OTHER COUPLE that'd been seated Five Minutes prior and takes their drinks order. Waitress THEN collects checks from table behind us. TEN MINUTES LATER: Waitress walks over to the OTHER COUPLE takes their food order. TWENTY MINUTES LATER: Wow, we're thirsty. TEN MINUTES LATER: Wow, we're REALLY thirsty, and starting to get hungry. OTHER COUPLE gets their drinks. (WTF?!?) TEN MINUTES LATER: WOW! We're REALLY, REALLY Thirsty AND Hungry FIVE MINUTES LATER: The HELPER brings three of our small plates. NO DRINKS ?!? We gently remind Helper of our drink order. ONE MINUTE LATER: OTHER COUPLE gets their food. (WTF?!?) TWO MINUTES LATER: We get our drinks. Our fourth small plate arrives and is THROWN ON THE TABLE. Literally. DINNER: Pan Seared Tuna on a bed of diced tomatoes and soy beans dressed in a wasabi cream sauce: NOT BAD. Though, the tuna could have been seasoned better. Fried Crab Wontons with old-bay seasoned, dijon goat cheese with a honey soy dipping sauce: UNDERWHELMED. The filling was QUITE LACKING and bland. The best part was the dipping sauce - which I used for the tuna. Scallops on a bed of (curried?) mashed sweet potatoes. Normally comes with bacon onion saute. We asked for that on the side as I don't eat red meat or pork or poultry: BLEH. The scallops were large and WOULD'VE BEEN GREAT if NOT SERVED HALF COOKED. Yet, somehow BURNT on the bottom and top (again, WTF?!?) The mashed sweet potatoes were the best part. Asparagus Tempura with curry dipping sauce: Good for the first few bites until I bit into the end that REALLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN CUT OFF. The dipping sauce was DISAPPOINTING. DRINKS: Mojito: Layers of water, rum, sugar, mint. NOT mixed ... at all. Dirty Olive, extra dirty: MEH. The Rumor Mill olive infused vodka on ice was okay. Which is BAD since this is supposed to be one of their specialties. And, it only came with two olives. Any self-respecting upscale drinker (much less bartender) knows that you never serve a martini with even numbered olives! DESSERT: We should've known better. But we didn't. We ordered two desserts (see below) and when they arrive, the waitress forgets to bring silverware. It takes ANOTHER THREE MINUTES to bring it. Which is IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE ORDERED ICE CREAM that was ALREADY MELTING. We ordered the Ice Cream Trio and Banana Wonton with Kahlua Espresso Ice Cream. When we asked what types of ice cream it was when she brought it (as the menu was unclear and we GOT something DIFFERENT than WE THOUGHT we ORDERED), SHE TOLD US it was: RASPBERRY SOMETHING KAHLUA COFFEE LEMON OLIVE OIL (um, okay). I asked what the ice cream was, then, that came with the Banana Wonton. She said: KAHLUA COFFEE Um, okay. The TWO ice creams SHE IDENTIFIED as BOTH Kahlua Coffee LOOKED COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from one another. This is WHAT IT ACTUALLY WAS: Raspberry Something = CHOCOLATE CHERRY Kahlua Coffee = CHOCOLATE BROWNIE Lemon Olive Oil = I STILL HAVE NO IDEA Kahlua Coffee = KAHLUA EXPRESSO (close enough) Yay! One out of four! (eye roll) WE ASK FOR OUR CHECK: She brings it to us within a reasonable amount of time. THEN she SLOWLY CLEARS the table as my beau is about to write out the tip. Um ... UNCOMFORTABLE! Cost of entire dinner: APPROXIMATELY $75 BEFORE TIP. WAS IT WORTH IT? = MOST DEFINITELY NOT!!! This is WHY I GAVE IT ONLY ONE STAR, but my beau thought the food was AT LEAST AVERAGE so he gives it two.

Our food had no flavor or spice. I have never had tuna tartare that had absolutely no flavor and the guac on top was spiceless as well. I am not talking about wanting heat--I wanted a flavor and it was totally bland. My husband's Mahi tasted frozen/freezer burned. When our server asked about the uneatened tartare, I said (nicely) I was kind of disappointed. His response was to ask if he could wrap it up for me to take home? We paid our tab and I picked up a salad to go at another restaurant to eat at home. Do not waste your money.

Wanted to like it. Can't. Service was probably the biggest disappointment. Good service can improve mediocre service. The issue was we only had 2 plates delivered at a time for our party of 4. At no point in our three plates each meal, did we have more than 2 plates on the table. Odd. Another disappointment was waiting until we had maybe 3 plates before we were told that one of our orders could not be fulfilled. Most of the food was either over-seasoned or under-seasoned. I liked the tuna tartar but even that needed a touch more of salt. The beet salad was reportedly good. One soup bowl was flavorless, another was way too salty. The food is too expensive to be so inconsistent. I don't mind paying $$ for my meal but the higher the price tag, the higher my expectations. Oh and my martini was just over half full. That was a little odd. Place was fairly empty which add to the lack-luster experience.

I'm dropping this to 2-star after the questionable stomach situation both of us suffered the next day. I'm betting from the seafood entrees. The rice balls still kick ass though.

Ouch with the awful reviews, but my wife and I were feeling adventurous so we decided to try it for lunch. So this is a LUNCH review only. And the food karma must've been with us because we had a decent experience. The menu is surprising so not sure if they are really trying to be uber trendy but hey, we were willing participants since we were uber hungry. From the pear & ginger salad, the honey-miso glazed scallops and the tuna tartare & guacamole dip to the must-have rice balls and tasty basket of sweet potatoes, the ensemble of food were overall delightfully good. My favorite is the crab dumplings. The place itself is quaint, the service friendly and oh, did I mention the drinks? As varied as the food. Now I would love to give them a 4/5 star but admittedly, there wasn't one dish that stood out enough and some were bordering a bit ordinary. So we will have to come back and see if the chef makes any tweaks, but I do admire the boldness of this place to try the unexpected. I'll be back for seconds.

A ripoff. I understand the concept of tapas, but the food was not special enough to be charging such high prices for such small amounts of food. I paid $12 for a two-inch morsel of mediocre salmon. And $9 for a dish of yellow beets that had but a couple nickel-sized beets chopped into quarters amidst a pinch of microgreens. Tastes are mundane at best. Save your evening and go elsewhere.

Skip the sushi. It isn't fresh, and the rice to fish ratio is about 80/20. The fried asparagus was ok, but the mayo-like dipping sauce it is served with was warm and tasted like it had turned. Good place to go to for a couple of cocktails and a dessert (fried banana dumplings) but not a full meal. The selections I have had on several visits are either too salty or lack flavor. It's too expensive given the quality of the food and like a previous reviewer mentioned, I don't mind spending top dollar on excellent small portions but this doesn't fit the bill. Literally.

This is a follow up to my prior review of this restaurant, sadly it's not improved at all. We went here last week for a birthday dinner for a friend. The worst thing was the service--really bad. The food (entrees, not small plates) were all delivered at different times, one member of our party just told them to forget about his food because it was so delayed (it then magically immediately appeared). We had to constantly ask for drink refills, and requests were frequently ignored. Our dessert arrived without utensils, our coffee arrived without: teaspoons, cream, or sugar. Then there was the food--not much better. The crab dip is ridiculously thin and runny, with little crap--it was gross. The sweet potato fries that the server raved about--somehow the chef was able to make them both soggy AND burnt--nasty. The crab dumplings by all appearances are just the deep fried frozen variety--with little taste. Our party had 8 people--two had food that was worth eating: the brussel sprouts small plate, and the fish and chips. Still my LEAST favorite restaurant in Ellicott City, still would rather eat at Subway.

Despite enthusiastic (if somewhat inexperienced) service and a pleasant atmosphere, I was very disappointed by the food. The appetizers were passable but entirely unremarkable (calamari, shrimp tempura, tuna tartar, crab won tons, sweet potato fries). I shared some sushi and, well...let's put it this way. I have been known to decimate sushi buffets. I can sink a sushi boat on my own. Yes, I have a sushi problem. I left more than half of my sushi from Rumor Mill uneaten. I had the soup du jour, a wonderful (sounding) curry, coconut and shrimp. Remember that scene in Ratatouille where the guy "fixes" the soup so well he yaks it out the window? The smell of the soup alone made the rat gag? This soup was like that. A dining companion described it as "horrendous." I hope that my experience was a fluke, but I'll have to rely on others to say so. I won't be back.

I've been to Rumor Mill a couple times since it's opened. The side dishes they offer are small, but creative. I appreciate food that has unique tastes, and because of that Rumor Mill was a pleasant surprise. My favorite menu item used to be the Brie, however the second time I came back they had changed the menu a bit. The first time the Brie was adequately sized and topped with either peach compote or a bacon compote. Both were amazing and added an extra taste that went great with the Brie. Unfortunately, when I came back the Brie was disappointingly smaller and no longer topped with either compote. Other dishes on the menu are still good though, like the calamari and the pear salad. The sliders are nice, but they don't serve regular ketchup here - instead there are different flavors like grape, orange, and old bay. The grape was not great, but the old bay was a nice twist that went fine with the burgers. I can see myself coming back in the future!

Interesting offerings, and good potential. We visited Rumor Mill at the beginning of dinner service and sat at the bar, planning to try several small plates. We were privy to quite a bit of conversation within the wait staff, which is entertaining for us to hear but I know would bother some other diners. The tuna tartare with guacamole was very standard - a little underseasoned, but with a good product to chip ratio. However, eating it, I could have been anywhere in the world - it is not a unique presentation, and far from the best I've had. I also tried a scallop dish that was good, but not life changing. Our other dish was the tomato stack with balsamic vinegar, which was tasty and fresh, though not seasonal. Rumor Mill's goal of new American cuisine might be better achieved with a more seasonal menu - it would have been nice to have some fall or winter flavors, instead of teases of summer. The list of wines by the glass goes nicely with the menu offerings, and the service was attentive. For the price, we agreed we would probably not visit again.

Overall I enjoyed the place. Some of the better/friendlier service I experienced in the greater Baltimore area. I had the beet salad, which I almost always order when given the chance. My only complaint with the salad was a dollop of what seemed to be commercial blue cheese or gorgonzola cheese dressing in the center of the plate - The salad had plenty of flavor to go around. I then had the tuna tartare with guacamole which was fresh (both parts) and delicious. I've since discovered similiar dishes are quite en vogue and even the Cheesecake factory has something similiar on their menu.

If you know what good food is supposed to taste like, don't eat at Rumor Mill. My girlfriend and I ordered the kobe beef sliders with guiness mustard and fried onions. We thought, how can we go wrong? The sliders were $14, steep, but we were willing to pay for good quality beef. The sliders came out, 4 decent sized sliders, the beef was cooked well done. How can you do that to Kobe Beef? The beef tasted like an old shoe with mustard on it. The guiness mustard is just regular old brown mustard. They lie. I could of gotten better sliders at Applebees. We also got the Calamari they had on special ($9). They described it as panko breaded with a chili infused sauce. The portion size was too small, the calamari wasn't crispy and didn't taste fresh. The chili infused sauce is just sweet chili sauce out of a bottle, and I know because I used to work at a sushi restaurant. I feel like they are trying to act like they are making this stuff homemade, but they really aren't. They are cutting corners left and right. My drink was also a dissapointment. I ordered a raspberry blossom ($8), made with their house infused raspberry vodka and fresh raspberry juice. It just tasted like I was drinking a kids juice box. I tasted no vodka, whatsoever. My girlfriend got the blood orange blossom and I tasted it. It was strong, but very good. I went up to the bar and told the bartender that I thought my drink tasted very weak, and had too much juice. Her reply was "What do you want me to do about it?" So rude. Also, our waiter seemed like he would rather be anywhere else in the world then at the restaurant serving us that night. He wasn't the worst waiter I've ever had, but he was just very un-friendly, and it felt like he couldn't wait for us to leave. This place is a total rip-off. Bad food, bad service, bad drinks, high prices. Don't do it.

This was really a one star experience. I convinced my then fiance to try this place out, a big mistake. We should have realized this when we walked in and there was no one to seat us. Eventually we just walked upstairs and sat down. Strike one. Service was horrible, the waitress had the deer in the headlights look all night. She ignored us most of the night and even worse, took drink orders and then never let us know that there was an issue with the bar. We got our drinks 1 and a half HOURS after ordering them. Strike two. The food was okay, we sort of enjoyed the scallop appetizer, but we have had better. I had high hopes for the green bean salad since it was a "specialty". It tasted like something my 9 yr old daughter would have dreamed up. Foul ball! The entrees, hmmm. Let's see, the sweet and sour chicken (no longer on menu) was $20+ and was not much better than what you get at the local chinese strip mall place. The ribs, while flavorful, were sadly dry and chewy. Strike three.

I have eaten here a few times in the past and it was decent. This last time it was awful! I ordered a hot tea. The waitress brought out a cup of lukewarm water that was heated in a coffee maker based on the color and flavor of the water. I added a tea bag and the water wasn't hot enough to brew the tea, and the warm water tasted of stale coffee. I ordered 4 tapas to share with my friend. One was a mushroom tart. It was as far from a tart as you could image. It was a few sliced mushrooms between two pieces of soggy toast. The menu described the tart as be accompanied by a goat cheese spread, that was missing from this dish. I also ordered the white bean dip which was suppose to come with flatbread. The dish came with stale pita chips. The dip was nothing like described in the menu. The waitress asked why we didn't eat the dip and I explained that the pita chips were stale and she commented that they were made fresh "yesterday". So I spent over $50 for a memorable meal, just not memorable in a positive way. Owners of the Rumor MIll if you are reading this, please stick to the menu descriptions and focus on quality control.

My friends hate to go out with me because I am very picky and often not pleased. This was certainly an exception to the norm. I was spending the weekend in Ellicott City with my girlfriend and our 6 month old baby. We found The Rumor Mill using OpenTable and were more than pleased. The food was incredible, it is tapas style so we each chose 3 items and shared everything, only complaint was that the tuna tartare lacked salt (in the Chef's defense, he served it with tortilla chips which are salty but we ate it without the chips). The drinks were just above average, they barrel age cocktails there which were all very original but none of them "wowed" us, the house made adult root beer was probably the best. Dessert was also a pleasant treat as everything is made in house including different flavors of ice cream. The server was green and not very knowledgable but she was very friendly and anything we asked she sought out the answer for us. The chef came out to meet our baby who was apparently the talk of the staff on a Saturday evening. I definitely look forward to my next chance to eat here. Check this place out.

I went here once for sushi and drinks at the bar and it was pretty enjoyable (although the decor was a little strange for a fusion restaurant, almost colonial). When neighbors invited us to dinner, we figured we go back for the full-on experience. The food was overpriced and really quite bad and the waiter was so strange in his awkward serving style, it was difficult not to laugh every time he came to the table. For instance, this dinner was around the holidays and, at the end of the meal, the waiter said, "What could be a better than a gift certificate to The Rumor Mill?" Given the fact that he had just cleared four plates of picked-at food, we found that pretty hilarious. I am not surprised by "Stewie's" review here where he said he was made to feel uncomfortable by wearing a hat in the bar. I have been told by several other people who've dined here that the owner or manager (whichever) was also really rude, and considering the quality of the food, he shouldn't go around p*ssing off paying customers.

We ate here after antique shopping with our dog. We were attracted by the outdoor seating and our dog was welcomed. It is a bit pricey for the portion size for some of the dishes but the food was creative and good. We ordered the pear and ginger salad and ribs (which I imagine are the most filling item on the menu). I wanted something more and chose the honey-miso glazed scallops, which were tasty. One was larger than the rest and a bit raw in the middle, but with being an avid sushi consumer, I did not find this disturbing. Service was good and friendly. Recommend.

We have been to the rumor mill over and over again. We love the tapas. I really don't understand how it has gotten a bad review. My uncle flew in from Japan and has been travelling the US, he has dined at many places from the west to east coast and said that the rumor mill was top on his list, it even beat out the much more expensive resturaunts. Its one of the best places to eat in ellicott city.

Hard to rate this place. We are frequent diners in many Ellicott City and Catonsville restaurants. Several people had recommended the Rumor Mill, so we finally tried it. Very excited by the online menu- we hoped it would be good. We planned this as a date night- 60 years old but taking care of elderly mom so this time out was as important to us as if we had babies at home! Bottom line- wonderful food!! We were so thrilled to find a new place for us to enjoy top of the line small plates. UNFORTUNATELY, we ordered a sparkling rosé from the special summer menu. Looked great- tasted great. Never dreamed that there were TWO on the wine list and when the check came, this one was $42 instead of the $30 one we thought we ordered. Disturbing BUT not at all as disturbing as the appearance of someone who challenged us "to split the difference "and acted as if we were trying to pull a fast one. The wine had never been shown to us, sat in a wine bucket away from the table, and when we did finally see the label we thought maybe WE were being ripped off. Horrible attitude toward us- ruined our whole experience there. Needless to say we will never return nor will we recommend to anyone. Sad to have this all happen over a wine that retails at $15!!! Even sadder that the man who soured our experience turns out to be the owner!!! Bad business practice- we'll stick to Regions in C-ville!

Well...I begged my man to take me here for dinner. I had glanced at the menu and peeked in their windows several times. (And might I say- their tableware is phenomenal!...beer glasses replicating bamboo, whimsy drinking glasses that look like they have been blown in the wind, stackable eda mame plates, fancy sake carafes...etc.) We ordered 1 large Kirin. *GULP* at NINE DOLLARS A POP! Who are they kidding??? Our favorite sushi dives serve this up for under $5 a and if I buy them in the store they're only $3.99! We also ordered a carafe of sake. Now I like my sake HOT. They only serve sake cold (even the kind thats SUPPOSED to be served warm!) at Rumor Mill, but they were gracious enough to take it back and nuke the chill off of it. As another reviewer noticed the staff was enthusiastic and somewhat inexperienced. We ordered 3 appetizers. The curry onion sticks (think onion rings sprinkled with curry powder and scallions), the Hoison chicken skewers and eda mame. Onion sticks were delicious! Ckn skewers were good but their presentation made them unbelievably fantastic! (I wish yelp allowed photo proof) and eda mame was prepared as it should be- warm and salty! We ordered 2 sushi rolls. The coconut shrimp roll and the "mi" something roll- I've forgotten the name of it because I will never be ordering it- or any sushi from rumor mill- again. The sushi was the size of those all you can eat places. You know...smaller than a quarter and the amount of tuna in my entire roll was probably less than 1 ounce. The amount of wasabi they give was puny. I left more than half on my plate and said to my husband as we were leaving "so...whats for dinner?" I NEVER say that after good sushi. We did have a good laugh though as we were paying the bill.... it says plain as day on the receipt "RUMOR MILL- SUSHI and RIBS" ...what was I thinking anyhow? We will be back to try the ribs, but my love of sushi will continue to be fulfilled elsewhere.

Food was pretty decent. Service wasn't great, but wasn't bad, either. I was a little disappointed with the fact that they obviously gave me the wrong wine and didn't give me the opportunity to verify, which I found a little unprofessional. Small plates were excellent, though, and did enjoy the seared tuna (forget what it was called on the menu, exactly) very much. Sweet potato fries were pretty excellent, too.

We just moved from DC and were feeling homesick for some of the fun tapas restaurants there. We went to the rumor mill for a late Sunday dinner and absolutely loved it. I'm usually a beer guy (and football was on) but the friendly bartender talked me into trying one of the fusion vodkas. Surprisingly loved it. I was tempted to try other flavors, but transitioned back to beer since it was a "school night." We tried 5 different small plates- all were terrific. The bbq sauce on the ribs was delicious and the salmon/mushroom/caper dish was out of this world. The salmon was cooked perfectly. Dessert was even better than dinner. I consider myself a creme brulee connoisseur and usually most enjoy the original vanilla flavor but was blown away by their amaretto white chocolate version. My wife had a banana wonton/espresso ice cream dish that was amazing. Overall, the atmosphere was lovely- cozy with several other couples about our age having dinner in the bar area & watching football. The service was great at the bar. We will absolutely be back!

OH NO. I hope they are reading these reviews and making some EDITS to the way they do things. FIRST of all: Went for First Friday thinking that the fusion idea sounded pretty good. Everything we ordered was THE WORST. The french fries with different ketchups ($8) came on a pitiful plate with about 25 french fries (no lying, we counted). Then, I hate it when share plates come in odd numbers. Three crab fritters do not separate well with 2 people. The tuna plate was small and the kobe beef sliders came out with tons of grease and a non-decorate plate. Yup. Just 4 little burgers. No garnish at ALL. Oh . . .we asked for ketchup and they told us it would be $1. Pfffft. Our bill was $80 and we left disappointed and disgusted. I won't start on the service or the atmosphere but suffice it to say, it's obvious that whoever runs this place is NOT a foodie nor do they understand anything about training a wait staff or creating an inviting atmosphere. It's sad because, the idea is a good one for Ellicott City but with places like the new Wine Bar setting a higher standard, they don't have time (and I'm sure, money) to continue working this way. Pull it together! I was embarassed for you.

Leave your pomposity at the door, relax, & enjoy some of the best food in the area. Honey miso scallops, rice balls, and the duck were amazing. White chocolate creme brulee, need I say more.Food/drinks arrived quickly, although there weren't many others so late @ night (try the chai tea). They might not suck up to you like some other fine dining establishments & might only seat you with a reservation but the food was excellent & our server knew the menu/food very well. They catered the night to you in a very nice setting. A must try, you will return. The drinks were out of sight & the nightlife even appeared to be there. Very quaint atmosphere/very romantic.

This place has come a long way since it's days as Sidestreets Saloon. It is newly renovated and under new ownership. The inside is now more open and airy with a bar downstairs and nice little dining area upstairs. They specialize in Asian fusion dishes and also have a whole menu of specialty martinis. I didn't really know what to expect being that I was in Old Ellicott City but my sushi was good and so were my drinks and the servers were all super friendly. I would definitely go back.

I read some bad reviews for this place but I have to say I've had nothing but good experiences here. The first time I went was for restaurant week in Howard County. My husband and I couldn't choose off the menu because it was decently sized and we both loved what we got. The second time I came with a large group for my birthday and the waitress was very attentive to us. The drinks here are AMAZING. They have a bunch of martini type drinks that are all different fruit flavors and they are soooo yummy. Definitely worth a try.

My boyfriend and I had a late lunch there yesterday while spending the afternoon in Ellicott City (very cute), and it was terrific. The waitress was friendly and attentive, and we had three tapas, all excellent. They were seared tuna on a bed of edamame (gorgeous presentation), a salad of mesclun, pear, candied ginger and baked goat cheese, and fantastic kobe sliders. My boyfriend also liked the beer they recommended. I'm really puzzled by the bad reviews: it was so good that we declared it a destination.

It wouldn't post without a star but our real rating is No STARS, we left after our drinks without eating because we were so disgusted by the behavior of the owner. A young couple with a small child came it & were told by the owner that they didn't have high chairs or booster seats. The couple looked pretty dejected as they left. My kids are older but I remember the days when there was a limited window of time for eating out, the Rumor Mill cost that family a lot of valuable time, maybe even their whole night out. But it wasn't the lack of accommodations for children that sent us packing it was the remarks the owner made to a server about not wanting "their kind" and "brats not welcome" as the young family left that caused us to cash out before we ate dinner. He was laughing as he said these things, not sure how chasing away customers is funny. Restaurants are considered the hospitality industry. The owner of the Rumor Mill doesn't seem to realize that he depends on others for the success of his business, his nasty remarks right where everyone could hear him was inexcusable. We'll never be back.

We had lots of tapas, all were simple but very tasty. Beet salad with gorgonzola, warm string beans walnut soy asparagus soy salad; fried curry tofu; and my favorite the mushroom tart.

I have crisscrossed this country, trying BBQ in many different places with different ethnic and regional overtones, Texas style, Tennessee style, Carolina style, Lebanese, Greek, Hawaiian, Peruvian, etc. So where do I find some of the best BBQ ribs I have ever tasted? Is it at a place that only does BBQ and is known regionally for the best BBQ?? No...it's in an Asian Fusion place. Am I nuts? First let me describe what I consider to be the ideal BBQ rack of baby back ribs. The rack or half rack is firm enough so you can pick up the entire rack by holding the last rib at the end of the rack. The outer surface should have a crust...almost cripsy, but hard and firm but tender....there should be a slight amount of char for aromatic flavor and texture of a hard crispy but tender exterior. The meat inside should be very tender and moist...a slight pull from the teeth would pull 90% of the meat away from the bone cleanly There would be small areas where some of the meat remains just due to the fact that you can't cook ribs perfectly uniformly. All the connective tissue and cartiledge should be very tender Yanking on one of the rib bones will separate it cleanly from the rest of the rack. The spices should not overpower the taste of the pork. My rack of pork ribs was just that picture of perfection. The really hard core, southern taste buds may not like the hints of soy and ginger in this Asian Fusion influenced rack, but the preparation and execution was near perfection. What came with this was the best side of sweet potato fries I have ever tasted. The fries were very light, non oily, and crispy and stayed crispy to the very end of the meal. They needed no seasonings....they were just perfect. Before all this I had the guacamole/tuna tartar with corn chips. Again perfection. The flavors were not overpowering to mask the delicate raw tuna. However there was a very strong overtone and aroma of citrus in the guacamole, but not heavy to mask the tuna. Another appetizer was sliced beef marinated in an orange marinade servered with a mustard/chili sauce on the side. This was bbq'ed on a wooden skewer. This too was done well where the aromas were strong but the actual flavor was subtle and well balanced. Another entree, beef filet done two ways......two medallions of very tender beef prepared two ways: One with a strong ginger teriyaki dipping sauce, and the other with a herbal chili butter Dessert was an amaretto/white chocolate creme brulee. The creme brulee was done perfectly with a hard carmelized crust evenly done over the entire top....WOW This place is definately worthy of a Yelp event here. There was a party of 30 people while I dined there so there is plenty of room for a large crowd less than 50 heads. Expect $30 to $45 per person before drinks. But definately worth the experience.

WORST SERVICE - we had three for lunch and we each ordered 2 appetizers - the waitress ask if we wanted them all at the same time and we replied yes - we were served one item at a time, and pretty much watched each other eat, this lunch took forever - the food was terrible, so bad that we didn't eat much of the items we ordered - the wine had to be sent back because it tasted like vinegar, however the replacement was good.
